Setelah hilang selama 500 tahun, sebuah Injil berukuran buku saku yang berasal dari abad ke-13 berhasil ditemukan kembali oleh Katedral Canterbury, Inggris.

Katedral Canterbury menemukan Injil ini dijual di London seharga 100.000 poundsterling atau sekitar Rp 1,85 miliar. Injil tersebut dibeli dengan menggunakan dana hibah dari National Heritage Memorial Fund sebesar 96.000 pounds (Rp 1,7 miliar) dan sisanya didapatkan dari uang hasil donasi.

Injil dari Abad Pertengahan tersebut diberi nama Lyghfield Bible. Injil itu merupakan milik seorang biarawan katedral tersebut di masa itu.

Injil tersebut diduga diproduksi di Paris. Bahasa yang digunakan dalam Injil tersebut adalah bahasa Latin dan kertas yang digunakan merupakan kertas perkamen yang mirip tisu.

Halaman dalam Injil diberi hiasan dan ini merupakan satu-satunya Injil dari Abad Pertengahan yang masih lengkap yang ada di katedral tersebut.

Injil Abad Pertengahan ini hilang pada abad ke-16 ketika Henry VIII menguasai Inggris. Pada saat itu, terjadi Reformasi Inggris dan terjadi pemisahan antara Gereja Inggris dengan Gereja Katolik Roma. Pada masa itu, ratusan biara ditinggalkan, termasuk Katedral Canterbury.

Setelah Katedral Canterbury ditinggalkan, diperkirakan Injil dan 30.000 koleksi buku di katedral tersebut diduga hilang. Saat ini hanya ada 30 volume buku dari koleksi Katedral Canterbury yang masih tersisa, menurut pernyataan resmi dari Katedral Canterbury.

"Kami sangat berterima kasih kepada para penyandang dana. Merupakan hal yang sangat penting bagi kami untuk memiliki salinan teks penting Umat Kristiani di dalam koleksi kami yang sebelumnya dimiliki oleh salah satu biarawan terakhir dari biara Abad Pertengahan," kata Cressida Williams, Kepala Arsip dan Perpustakaan Katedral Canterbury.
